Wonder Woman is Everywhere

So, anyone who knows me already knows I am a huge Wonder Woman fan.  From my review, of course, you know I was completely over the moon about the movie- and I have watched the movie’s runaway hit in praise and box office alike with both delight and schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude because, as you know, there were many people at Warner Brothers who thought nobody would watch a Wonder Woman movie. People who were clearly taken by complete surprise at how beloved Wonder Woman is, as a character in general and in this portrayal specifically. Of course, those of us who know the character aren’t surprised one bit.

So… as the only commercial and critical success Warner Brothers has had in the DC Cinematic Universe, Warner Brothers seems to have gotten wise. A year after the first Justice League trailer which emphasized darkness and the Snyder-grittiness, we got a vastly different in trailer tone and focus: more humor, and a lot more Diana.

In my mind, I have a mental image of several WB execs clinging to Diana’s boot, asking her to save the cinematic franchise.

Well, that mental image isn’t too far from reality. Comicbook.com reports that not only has the Justice League trailer altered to feature Wonder Woman front and center, but that it has also retooled the movie’s synopsis on Mattel’s website to feature the Amazing Amazon at the fore.  Prior to Wonder Woman’s success, this used to be WB’s promotional material for JL:

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

And now, the new synopsis that was released alongside the new (fantastic-looking, I might add) Mera dolls:

Once again, Wonder Woman must demonstrate her ability as a fierce warrior. Facing a great enemy, she and Batman join forces to recruit a group of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. Having formed an unprecedented League of heroes, they set out to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

And now we hear that Diana is going to be part of Flash’s movie.

On the one hand, I am actually happy to see a character who has been unjustly relegated to the background suddenly be the proverbial center of the DC cinematic universe.

On the other hand, I am wary that the same WB execs who wouldn’t bet their sick, dying dog on Diana are suddenly now thinking that her appearing anywhere is the Midas Touch they need, as opposed to a script-writer and a director who understand the character. Hopefully WB is not that stupid. So far, they have treated Diana with the respect the character deserves, so here is hoping.

Don’t screw this up, Warner Brothers. Just give your characters the same respectful, faithful treatment that Patty Jenkins gave Diana, and stop trying to turn everyone into Batman. Your characters are beloved for a reason, you know?

Just let the wonder guide you.
